As per the Constitution of Republic of Bulgaria all its citizens, including citizens form the EU and The EEA countries, living and working in Bulgaria, shall have the right to free education in state and municipal schools. By this mean, the only charges the parents are obligated to pay are for their children’s textbooks, stationery, and school field trips. 
 

According to the type of training and the level of education, schools in Bulgaria are divided into primary schools, basic school, secondary general schools, specialized secondary schools, vocational secondary schools, sport schools, art schools, and schools for children with special educational needs.
 
The grading system for all Bulgarian secondary schools is uniform. Based on a six-point scale, it grades from 'fair' to 'excellent'. The education in Bulgaria is compulsory for children from 7 to 16 years of age. The school year in Bulgaria starts on 15 September and comprises two terms finishing in late May or mid June.

The college awards the degree Specialist after professional oriented studies with duration of three years. Holders of that degree are given the rights to continue their studies at Bachelor’s level.
 
Universities in Bulgaria 
There are more than 40 higher educational institutions in Bulgaria, offering degrees at undergraduate and graduate levels. In most universities in Bulgaria the academic year begins on 1st October and ends on 30th June and consists of fall and spring semesters. The academic year covers up to 30 weeks.
 
The system of university higher education in Bulgaria organizes studies after completed secondary education, coverage the following degrees:

  • First degree requires a minimum 4-year course of instruction and the graduates acquire the educational and qualification degree of Bachelor. Training for each specialty is finalized by sitting for state examinations or defence of a diploma thesis.
